SSL Security: a must for all websites

Posted on 25th August 2020

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is what adds the HTTPS in a web address and the padlock next to it.

SSL encrypts data submitted through your website. Whether it's payment details or contact information, this data is encrypted on its journey from the user's browser to the web server.

Prior to 2018, SSL was only required for websites that took payment details. Standards have changed and it should now be present on any and all websites.

If you haven't adopted SSL for your website yet, it's worth reading into why it's a must have.

Google Rankings Improved

For a few years now, Google have been pushing for a more secure web. To achieve this, they began rewarding websites that have adopted SSL. Adding SSL to your website could help you see a rise in your position in the Search Results, so if you're looking to boost your ranking or even maintain your current position, SSL really is a feature you need to add to your website.

Data Protection Laws

In May 2018 the law changed. Based on our interpretation of GDPR, businesses must now be encrypting any client data that is submitted through the business website. Without SSL, your customer's data is being passed from their browser to the Web Server in plain text. Adding SSL to your website encrypts that data, so if anyone were to intercept it, you've ensured that they can't read the personal information.

Web Browsers & Customer Confidence

Since October 2017, Google Chrome and many other browsers have been signalling to users when a website isn't secure. As a customer or web user yourself, would you trust a website that had a 'Not Secure' flag in the corner? Even if you're not too worried about your Search Results, or you don't take any personal information via a contact form, you'll still want to add SSL to your website to ensure your customers' trust and confidence in your business.
