3. Get a free Google Local listing on Google Maps.

Google Local is the new Yellow Pages. With search terms becoming increasingly location specific, you need a listing on Google Local. Your business details are attached to a pointer on Google Maps, and these Google Local results appear at the top of search listings.

4. Put Videos about your Business on Youtube.

Over half of all search engine traffic at the moment is Video, with Youtube being the second most popular search engine. Make some films of your work with a digital camera and upload your videos on Youtube. Add a link to your website in the Video Description.

5. Get Blogging.

Write a useful article for people looking for your products or services packed full of keywords and submit it to blogs and websites looking for content in return for links. The Toolkit Websites Southampton blog has loads of hints and tips on how to market your business online.

Read our guide on why you need a blog.

6. Find Out Who Links to You.

You can check to see who is linking to your website using Google. Type

link:http://yourwebsiteaddresshere.co.uk

to see who's linking to your website. If there's no one linking to you but you, then approach friends and colleagues who have websites to add links to your website.

The best sites to ask to link to you are ones in related fields as these give you some Google authority. So a link on a website of a company you've worked with would be better than a link on a friend's who runs a company in a completely unrelated field.

The Toolkit offers many other tools for getting a good ranking, and to help you we have written a comprehensive guide on what you can do to get a good ranking using the Toolkit. Download our Free Guide:

8. Use Pay-Per-Click Advertising (PPC)

In the short term, why not consider Pay Per Click Advertising? This can be working for you whilst your natural search ranking is building through your SEO.

This is the process of advertising with Google, Yahoo, and MSN to guarantee that your website will be clicked on by visitors who have searched for relevent search terms. Typically your advert will always appear on the first page and how much you pay determines how high your ad will appear. This process is the easiest to guarantee visitors to your website however you pay per click for each visitor (from 5p to £5 per click).
